I roll all my clothes. Makes it fit better in a travel backpack. Another weird thing I do is bring a box of Ziploc bags. It's way easier to organize your stuff. Plus I hate using the regular containers for my toothbrush. It's too much work to get toothpaste off of one of those shower bags or whatever they're called.
Superb advice! Flying to and from Japan has taught me some things about carry-on essentials. May I add to your list: iPhone or iPad with downloaded shows, music, and podcasts; Sour Patch Kids; and a book.
