Legendary writer/editor Maria Shollenbarger on finding great travel inspiration and the hotel she could happily move into, plus a new-to-us luggage brand we are loving right now
So so so good! Iβve been reading Mariaβs pieces in the FT since I was a teen at the Saturday morning table with my dad. As a fellow Florence residentβI agree, Casalingaβs wildly affordable roast chicken (and roast beef with crispy spuds) is the best in town. Grazie ππ»
Mariaβs point about the writing voice getting edited away, and wanting a space where it doesnβt, is something every long-form writer feels eventually. Iβm so glad sheβs found it.ββββββββββββββββ
Love that the Siwa Desert in Egypt made it to Maria's list! I went to high school in Cairo and loved exploring. The wildest place I ever experienced IRL was a whale graveyard in the desert. At one point in time it was the ocean. *mind blown*
So much timely information! We were heading to Rome from Spain just as I read this article so I booked the recommended restaurant in Rome (we ordered both artichoke recommendations - not dishes I would have chosen before) and so good! And we never would have stumbled upon or even noticed the restaurant (Al Pompiere) had I not read about it. I bought a gorgeous journal at Chez Dede and we got tickets to the Bernini Exhibit at the Palazzo Barberini. Thank you!
Delightful! Just like our dear Maria.
I am pretty committed to my light, tiny, lime green Roncata (it is called the magic bag in our house) but my curiosity is peaked by the ROAM.
Toss up between ROAM and Horizn Studios.... But Carly's carry on expands, which, winner

Such inspiration from Mariaβs pov!!
Superb. I fell in love with Maria's writing after reading her article in Financial Times about coming home in the middle of the pandemic.
