Last week was my first time in Abaco, and surprisingly, also my husband Matt’s. As an avid fly fisherman, he’s been many more places in the Bahamas than I have, but somehow he hadn’t yet made it here. We fell madly in love with it—very low key, with incredibly beautiful beaches and water. To be in a place like this—uncrowded, in January—was a complete pinch-me situation.
Granted, Abaco isn’t for everyone. Nothing against Harbour Island, but if that is what you’re looking for, you don’t need to read any further! If you want dressing-up nights and running into friends in chic restaurants or charming little shops, Abaco won’t be your jam. If you love empty beaches where you can walk for an hour, pockets overflowing with the best shells, and seeing nobody…then come! You probably should enjoy cooking and making your own drinks—setting up house for a week—because there aren’t really many restaurant options. And if you have a fishing-obsessed person in your life, this place is definitely for you.
Our days began with long walks on the beach, planning our meals, a swim, eating a long lazy lunch, maybe a field trip out to a grocery store, a swim, getting some sun…and then cocktail hour followed by dinner and pretty early bedtimes. I subscribe to the idea that when all the days feel the same and have that rhythm, and there isn’t much to do, that’s when you really relax. If you’ve gotten this far, I’m glad—I want you
