Well hello, friends! We just couldn’t live without our community—you guys—who we used to hear from so often on Substack. So while we’re really glad that we built our own website, Yolo Journal to house all of our offerings (print and digital) in one place, there is one thing our new site isn’t built to do and that is to connect us directly with you, and you to each other.
To be clear, we love our new site (hopefully you’ve checked it out!). It’s where we keep our digital archive—our Black Books, Travel Planners, Dispatches, packing stories and hotel reviews—all of it really easy to access, save and search. And, I mean, in travel, search is everything! But so is community. So we’re going to use each platform for what it’s best at—Yolo Journal as our archive, and our Substack for community. Think of our site as the library, and Substack as the café just next to it.
What does this mean and how will they be different? On Saturdays, you’ll continue to receive your Yolo Intel newsletter with the week’s new digital issue, and in the coming weeks, on Wednesdays, you’ll get a Substack email from us. Substack will be the place to ask questions and get answers—from us and from each other. We’ll be active in the chat vertical, where we’re moving our original You Asked For It column, but we’ll also be posting Q&As with some of our expert contributors, packing videos, moodboards, playlists, and eventually, that podcast I keep promising.
And so for all of those reasons, we thought we’d change what we’re calling ourselves on Substack. I’m going back to my club girl roots (yes, I was a club promoter at a nightclub in San Francisco in the early ‘90s—Club 1015!), and calling this Club Yolo. Also: I’ve lived my whole life with fomo that I never got to go to Club Med, but my brother did.
It’s a work in progress! We’re still figuring out exactly what we’re doing here, so we aren’t charging anything until we determine what merits a price tag.
And now that we’re back—let’s start talking. What do you want more of? Less of? Join us in our chat (hit the button below)—we’ll be answering your questions and listening to your feedback there. If you only read Substack on email, just click below to launch Substack chat on your desktop or mobile app. But if you already use the Substack app, you’ll see the chat icon at the bottom of your home screen.
PS: In case you started following us here after we moved over to our new site and you have no idea what we’re talking about, you can read more about us, and subscribe, here.
Lunching at Wayfare Tavern per the San Fran Blackbook recommendations!
I’ve missed you on Substack! I like having my reads in one place
