Here & There #13
The coat, ring, and design-forward rentals on my moodboard this month—plus all the openings we’re excited about, from hotels to Highway 1!
Greetings from Jaipur, where I’ve been for the last couple of days with our friends who live here showing us all around. I’ll be sharing my travel diary in two weeks, so stay tuned! In the meantime, if you happen to be coming here before that, our Rajasthan Travel Planner is great—I’ve been referencing it while here. Below is my moodboard, which really is a collection of what I put in my notes app, and screenshots and photos of things I love but haven’t sprung for yet.
In other news, on our website all this month we’re in Jan reset mode. So many of you loved Tracy Georgiou’s Esalen story and Kim Ficaro’s “The Artist’s Way” for Travel, and if you missed our big list of Our Favorite City Hotel Spas, check it out.
JANUARY MOODBOARD
Bespoke architectural maps that function in an old-school way—throw in your bag and reference as needed—or use the QR code on the back that gives you a digital guide along with pins and a Google map.
This new rental from our friends Margot and Massimiliano, who own the lovely Parco dei Sesi in Pantelleria, have restored Borgo Sant’Angelo in the Lomellino region, a short drive from Milan, Turin, or Genoa.
A Nordic bathing club in NYC I’m looking forward to checking out—Finnish and infrared sauna, plus cold plunge.
Also in the city, our friend and contributor Conor Burke co-opened a beautifully curated vintage design/antiques space called Gallery Folly—I want everything, but especially this Danish wall sconce.
In London, The Park’s top-secret traditions (well, until now): the one-pound martini, formerly reserved for our in-the-know regulars. It’s served on Friday afternoons from lunch through dinner, and all you have to do is ask! A true TGIF moment!
My husband said this Gem Palace ballerina ring I saw in Jaipur over the weekend was something I should think about… and I can’t stop thinking about it.
This beautiful book on Paris with over 400 favorite addresses from one of the most creative artist/designer/shopkeepers in town.
I think a Moka might be one of my favorite objects, as well as one of my favorite things to drink. This photo by one of my dear friends is available online and I need to get it.
Winter/spring/summer dreaming with this list of rentals that were all created by an AD100 designer or architect.
In love with this Lodental coat made by my Roman friend Andrea Provvidenza.
ARRIVALS & DEPARTURES
Some new flight routes opening, can’t-miss museum exhibits closing, and just-opened restaurants and bars we might plan a trip around…
The family behind Lake Como icons Passalacqua and Grand Hotel Tremezzo opened Casabianca, a three-floor villa turned gallery showcasing Paolo and Antonella De Santis’ personal art collection. After exploring the 15 rooms full of Italian and international works, you can grab pranzo at the outpost of beloved Milanese institution Cova on the ground floor.
Semi-private airline Aero announced a new LA/NY route and launched the only non-stop commercial flight between NY and Aspen running on select dates in winter and summer, which—for the price of $5,100 per seat—cuts down the travel time from 8 hours to 4.5, with the bonus of in-flight Starlink, an open bar, and dining catered by Erewhon (naturally).
Speaking of Aspen, White Elephant is branching out from its East Coast roots with their new property in Aspen, opening next month. The 54-room hotel will have a boot lounge, heated ski lockers and direct shuttle from their location just off Main St. to the base of the mountain, plus guests will get access to Aspen’s Base State Longevity Lounge, which has IV drips, red-light therapy, a hyperbaric chamber, saunas, and cold plunge to help recover from a day on the slopes, or just a few drinks at altitude.
In other semi-private air travel news, Petco is teaming up with JSX, to introduce pet-friendly amenities at some of their lounges, kitted out with dog cookies, carriers, water stations and pet-relief areas to make flying with your dogs as seamless as possible.
California’s Highway 1 reopened last week, restoring access to the coastal route along the Big Sur coast that’s been closed for nearly three years. The perfect excuse to plan a Cali road trip!
In hotel news, The Oberoi Rajgarh Palace, Khajuraho just opened in a 350-year old palace on a sprawling estate in India’s Panna National Park—it’s the first high-end hotel within a short drive of the exquisite Temples of Khajuraho, which the Oberoi’s historian gives guests tours of at sunrise. Closer to (our!) home, we’re also intrigued by The Cooper Charleston, which is somehow the city’s first great waterfront hotel, and The Dean Munich, which we are eager to get back to after working on our Munich List, both opening in March.
The New Museum’s 60,000 sq ft building expansion on NYC’s Bowery will open to the public on March 21st, with free admission throughout their opening weekend.
We are decidedly not Vegas people, though eating at Gymkhana (a favorite stop in London), which just opened there in December, makes us almost excited to go.
At Bar Panisse, a new cocktail bar in Berkeley from the team behind—you guessed it—Chez Panisse, you can have a full meal of small plates along with your gimlet or Sazerac. And going off looks alone, especially the pewter-topped bar and dark wood wainscoting above it, it’s going to hold a flame to the OG, or at the very least give us all a better chance of eating from their hallowed kitchen!
Harry’s Bar in Florence is finally back! Yolanda was there last week and reported back that it’s excellent and truly feels like the OG, minus the views. Their new location is on Via Il Prato, where they brought back the original bar, and all the same decor and characters that were at their location on the Arno.
A new bookstore in London called Travellers Tales just opened, dedicated entirely to travel books, and they even have an in-house travel design team if flipping through the pages of the latest Paul Theroux novel or Taschen coffee table book inspires you to plan a trip.
Final call! For those of you in Florence or NYC this week, there are two exhibits you should catch before they close: Fra Angelico at Palazzo Strozzi and Museo di San Marco is running through January 25th, with 150 paintings borrowed from 70 lenders, and the Ruth Asawa Retrospective at MoMA is on through February 7th, featuring 300 pieces from her oeuvre that span wire sculptures, bronze casts, prints, and more.

Incredible roundup as always. That Bar Panisse detail is gold, been wanting a proper Chez Panisse experience but always get waitlisted. The pewter bar and wainscoting alone make it worth the trip, and finally having access to their kitchen withou the insane reservation presure is huge.
So happy I got to see both the Fra Angelico and the Ruth Asawa shows. Both still resonating.
